Jumhoory Party announced Thursday that it was rescheduling the party's third congress to a week ahead, on 21st and 22nd of June. Earlier the congress was to be held at Paradise Island Resort on the 28th and 29th of June.
According to a spokesperson from JP, the date was amended during their 122nd meeting. However, they did not disclose a reason for the change in schedule.
In a statement given by JP, the party stated that the decision to endorse a coalition candidate as the party candidate, will be made during the national congress.
The party had previously said that JP's presidential candidate would be its leader, Qasim Ibrahim.
Owing to a 3-year prison sentence levied over him, as well as being over 65 years of age, Qasim is in fact ineligible to run for office in the upcoming presidential elections.
However, representatives from Jumhoory Party have repeatedly insisted that Qasim had been cleared of the charges made on February 1st, and that he would be contesting in the election.
In the presidential elections slated to be held during September this year, the candidate for the ruling party PPM, will be incumbent President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Gayoom. Although the opposition parties have formed a coalition, they are yet to declare a presidential candidate for the election.
