Preliminary hearing of Nasheed’s appeal case tabled for tomorrow

The preliminary hearing on the appeal of former President Mohamed Nasheed’s sentence has been tabled for tomorrow at the High Court.
The case was sent for appeal to High Court by Prosecutor General’s office، for which tomorrow’s tabled hearing will discuss on whether to take the case or not.
According to former President Nasheed’s secretariat High Court had informed the news to their office over the preliminary hearing scheduled for 14:00hrs tomorrow.
Prosecutor General reports that the case has been sent for appeal due to a high level of individuals and authorities questioning the authenticity and transparency of Nasheed’s trial which concluded in him getting a 13 year life sentence for terrorism charges – due to the abduction of Criminal Court’s Chief Justice Al-Ustad Abdulla Mohamed – by the Criminal Court.
Nasheed’s advocate team had requested from Prosecutor General’s Office for the appeal of the case as the defense did not receive viable or adequate time to present their case as well as several rights of the defendant – Mr. Mohamed Nasheed – was violated or lost during the court proceedings، according to his lawyers’ team.
The case has been appealed under the power vested onto Prosecutor General in the Maldivian Consitution’s Article number 222، sub-section (i).
