A prominent lawyer has stated that receiving proper instructions from international lawyers on improving the local legal system will be a boost to the Maldives.
Speaking to Miadhu news, the lawyer stated that international assistance is urgently required to rectify the issues facing the legal system. He added that there were prominent lawyers in the community and stated that if their knowledge was used, then the system will improve as well. He cited that if the bills in the parliament were fully discussed and passed, then the issues facing the sector will become less prominent.
He also stated that a continuous process of amendments only hampered the effectiveness of the bill and does not benefit the public, the Government or the Parliament.
He added that lawyers such as Amal Clooney consulting on local cases was a big advantage to the system.
He also noted that as our nation is muslim, we have to ensure that the clauses in the laws are related to island, which will limit the number of issues arising from the system. He added that the biggest issue facing the judicial system was delayed verdicts, especially when it concerns the rights of the individual citizen and financial cases. He noted that the causes were not just attributable to the Courts, but attributed to the whole system.
