IDU calls to immediately release Ex-President Nasheed

The International Democrat Union has called on the Maldivian authorities to immediately release former President Mohamed Nasheed.
In a statement released on Monday، IDU called on the Government of Maldives for an immediate release of ex-President Nasheed – leader of IDU’s member in the Maldives – and re-open negotiations with the opposition.
Continuing the statement، IDU said that ‘the 13-year sentence، handed down in a sham trial described as ‘a travesty of justice’ by Amnesty International، was officially commuted to house arrest on 19 July’.
The Union further said a statement of compliance was issued، however، the Maldivian authorities have denied receiving it.
Nasheed was transferred back to Maafushi Prison، on Sunday night.
IDU said that as the authorities escorted Nasheed، crowds of demonstrators gathered outside his house in protest.
The International Democrat Union (IDU) is a working association of over 80 political parties of the center and center right، currently chaired by New Zealand’s Prime Minister John Key.
