Maldives State Shipping (MSS) has announced that it is increasing its routes and importing items from Thailand and China to the Maldives.
Speaking on the occasion of the fourth anniversary of the government, STO Managing Director Hussain Amr said the company’s aim is to connect more sectors with Maldives. As a result, all the goods needed in Maldives will be provided to the people with convenience, he said.
Noting that MSS started its work during the most difficult times of COVID-19, Amr said the shipping service was criticized by many people when it was first launched. However, Amr said the company’s hard work brought many of the items needed to Maldives.
Amr said it was vital for a country like Maldives that relies on imports to have its own shipping line. In the future, MSS is looking to start operating routes other than Maldives, he said. The company will start routes to Bangkok and China and is working to bring goods to Maldives from those destinations, he said.
MSS is a government-established subsidiary of STO that facilitates the lowest-cost importation of commodities to the Maldives. The company began operations in April 2020. MSS presently owns three ships. They consist of two container ships and a 44,000-tonnes bulk carrier. The bulk carrier connects Dubai and Male’. Its purpose is to transport supplies for the constructions sector. The two container ships deliver products between Maldives, and Colombo and Singapore.
