Zakat House to develop 10 story building in Hulhumale'

"Baithu-Zakat" building, a 10-story structure under Zakat House, is currently under development in Hulhumale', said Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed.
He expressed hope that construction would begin this year.
The minister also highlighted that an agency has been established under Zakat House to ensure that the most deserving beneficiaries receive zakat. The building will serve as the headquarters for the Zakat office while also offering office space for rent.
“This building will be the Zakat Fund’s first investment, with 10 floors available for office rental, in addition to housing the Zakat office,” he said.
Minister Shaheem further said that the revenue generated from renting out office space would be distributed among zakat beneficiaries.
Strengthening the zakat system in the Maldives is a pledge of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. To fulfill this commitment, Zakat House was established on December 18, 2023.
The minister said that last year saw the highest-ever collection of zakat on real estate in the history of Maldives, with the Zakat Fund receiving more than MVR 101 million.
Previously, zakat was managed under a special department within the Ministry of Islamic Affairs. However, with the establishment of Zakat House, it now operates as a separate agency.
The responsibilities of Zakat House include the development and promotion of the Zakat Fund, as well as the establishment and implementation of investment standards to ensure long-term benefits.
Minister Shaheem said that in the past, zakat funds were used without clear policies or systematic considerations, therefore, the agency aims to provide a structured and sustainable solution.
