The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has requested the Prosecutor General's Office to press charges against five individuals in connection with corruption related to a housing project intended for employees of the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC).
According to a statement issued by the ACC today, those facing charges include former MTCC CEO Hassan Shah, former General Manager Shifau Ali, and Tender Evaluation Committee members Hussain Zuhury, Mohamed Nazim, and Ismail Adam.
The case revolves around the awarding of a contract to a foreign company for the construction of two 15-story towers in Hulhumalé Phase 2. ACC’s investigation found that the company received evaluation points in violation of the tender criteria, and despite clear breaches of the agreement, the contract was neither canceled nor reviewed. Moreover, advance and progress payments were released improperly.
ACC revealed that the state incurred financial losses exceeding MVR 39 million due to these decisions. The charges being pursued include abuse of official authority for undue gain and acting against the state’s financial interests. An additional charge of “attempted offense” has also been proposed against former General Manager Shifau Ali.
ACC further instructed MTCC to calculate and recover any additional financial losses associated with the case.
