Police Commissioner Ali Sujau has resigned from his post, with sources close to him citing a desire to prioritize family responsibilities. His resignation comes amid mounting public criticism, particularly regarding the police's handling of the investigation into the fall of a young woman, Yumnu, and a controversial incident involving Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen calling shujau during a police press conference.
Sujau’s resignation follows sustained protests in Malé by youth demanding justice for Yumnu. Demonstrators have also called for the resignation of Home Minister Ali Ihsan and Transport Minister Ameen, though both ministers have publicly stated they have no intention of stepping down.
Protesters' demands extend beyond resignations. They are calling for a transparent investigation, prosecution of all involved, clarification of inconsistencies in the released CCTV footage, disclosure of collected evidence, an apology from police for misinformation shared with the public, and an independent inquiry into the police’s conduct during the investigation.
The government has yet to announce details regarding the appointment of a new Police Commissioner following Sujau’s departure.
