The Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has completed the dredging of 49 hectares of land as part of the third phase of the Hulhumale' land reclamation project
Photos from the site show a heavily rusted barge submerged in the lagoon, with visible signs of deterioration. Sun has learned that the barge has been underwater for a long time and will be costly to remove. The vessel, previously unseen due to its position beneath the surface, has no known owner.
Despite the presence of the barge, dredging operations have continued in the area. MACL has not responded to requests for comment.

The third phase of the Hulhumale' reclamation project has drawn criticism on social media, with users raising concerns about environmental impact and project transparency. MACL has stated that the dredging will be completed within the next six months.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu previously announced in late November that dredging of the Giraavaru lagoon and Hulhumale' Phase III would be completed within three months. Since then, land plots have been drawn for recipients under the government’s housing programme.
