STELCO will take electricity meter readings next week ahead of Ramadan, as the company prepares to implement the government’s decision to cap domestic electricity bills for the fasting month.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced three months ago that electricity bills charged at the domestic rate during Ramadan will not exceed MVR 400. Any amount above that will be discounted.
STELCO said meter readings will be taken on Monday and Tuesday to prepare a separate bill for the month of Ramadan, which begins next Wednesday. The company has requested the cooperation of customers during the process.
The President first made the announcement at a PNC rally held last November to mark the government's second anniversary.
Last Ramadan, the government also provided discounts on electricity bills. President Muizzu has pledged to continue offering discounts on both electricity and water bills during Ramadan. Last year, the total value of discounts amounted to around MVR 140 million.
