The Maldives is set to install advanced Doppler radar systems across four regions to strengthen its national early warning system, Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim has announced.
The new radar installations will be located in Kulhudhuffushi, Vilimalé, Kadhdhoo and Fuvahmulah City, providing comprehensive nationwide coverage to improve the country’s ability to forecast severe weather and respond to climate-related risks.
The expansion is a cornerstone of the government's mission to achieve "Early Warning for All." Alongside the radar rollout, practical work is set to begin imminently on a brand new building for the Maldives Meteorological Service's branch in Addu City. This facility will be equipped with a large S-band radar, similar to the powerful system currently operating in Hulhule, significantly boosting forecasting capabilities in the southern atolls.
Minister Thoriq emphasised that the selected sites were designated after careful consideration of national territory and maintenance feasibility.
The main objective of this work, according to the Minister, is to strengthen the national early warning system by increasing the weather forecasting capacity and to increase the vigilance of the country in relation to climate change.
The broader modernisation plan includes rebranding the Meteorological Office, upgrading its website and mobile application, repairing automatic weather systems, and expanding the observation network to collect crucial data from ten offshore areas. This comprehensive upgrade marks a critical step in safeguarding the vulnerable island nation against the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events.
