MACL Conducts Inspections at Nine Domestic Airports Following Transfer from RACL

The Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has initiated comprehensive site inspections at nine domestic airports recently transferred from the Regional Airports Company Limited (RACL). The move comes after the government approved consolidating operations under MACL and dissolving RACL in September 2024.
MACL’s Executive Committee and technical teams visited these airports last week to assess infrastructure conditions and identify urgent needs. During the visits, the team met with airport staff to understand on-the-ground challenges.
MACL Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed acknowledged that many facilities were in poor condition at the time of transfer. He cited the breakdown of a fire truck at Fuvahmulah Airport as a critical safety hazard that halted flights until replacement equipment was procured.
Addressing the situation, Shareef assured that all affected airports will undergo necessary repairs and upgrades within the next six months to prevent disruptions for airlines and tourists.
The transfer of these airports marks a strategic effort to streamline operations, reduce costs, and strengthen national aviation infrastructure. The consolidation is part of broader government reforms targeting improved efficiency across public enterprises.
