As Muslims around the world welcome the Islamic New Year, 1447, senior political figures in the Maldives and former presidents have shared messages of goodwill, prayer and reflection, recognising the occasion's spiritual and historical gravity.
The Hijri New Year commemorates the Hijrah, the Prophet Muhammad's (PBUH) migration from Makkah to Madinah, a formative moment that laid the foundation for the Islamic state. Across the Muslim world, the day is observed as a time for introspection and collective supplication for peace, unity and prosperity.
Among those extending greetings, Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef conveyed his message via social media, offering prayers for "joy, prosperity, peace, and security" for the Islamic Ummah. His sentiments were echoed by Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla, who also posted his well-wishes online.
Expressions of goodwill also came from former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, who addressed the global Muslim community with a message of congratulations. He prayed for Almighty Allah's blessings, calling for renewed peace and prosperity both within the Ummah and worldwide.
Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih joined in the observance with a post on X, extending greetings to the people of the Maldives and the broader Islamic community. He shared his hopes that the new year would bring abundance, joy and advancement for Muslims at home and abroad.
Former President Mohamed Nasheed shared similar sentiments. In his message, directed at the Maldivian people and the wider Ummah, he offered prayers for a year marked by happiness and shared wellbeing.
Qasim Ibrahim, leader of the Jumhooree Party and Member of Parliament for Maamigili, also marked the occasion. He extended his best wishes to Maldivians and Muslims globally, expressing hopes for heightened stability, prosperity and collective progress in the year ahead.
Messages recognising the significance of 1447 Hijri were not confined to these individuals alone. A broad array of ministers, senior government officials and political leaders used social media to reflect on the occasion and to express hopes for a peaceful and prosperous year across the Islamic world.
