MNDF has said that weapons were not used in any way to threaten former President Mohamed Nasheed to resign.
MNDF Male’ Area Commander Brigadier General Ibrahim Mohamed Didi said that former President Nasheed has claimed in an interview with a foreign media source that he was forced and intimidated by officers who threatened to use their weapons if he did not resign. Didi denied these claims during a press conference tonight, and said that the former President was not held at gunpoint by any Officer, and that the decision to resign was Nasheed’s own.
“I was the Operation Commander during yesterday’s incident. I assure Maldivian people that no member of MNDF used any weapon to threaten him to resign,” the Brigadier General said.
He condemned the statements which claim the use of weapons in yesterday’s incident. He said that these claims are not true and that the former President is misinformed.
Didi said that members of MNDF’s conduct in yesterday’s situation was correct, and that former President Nasheed was accorded the necessary protection up till his resignation. He also said that MNDF will be sincere in safeguarding the newly formed government.
Didi also refuted claims that former President Nasheed ordered MNDF to shoot at the Police. He said that the former President did not order them to shoot at the Police or the public.
He said that MNDF will not allow any impediment towards the current government, which has been formed according to existing laws.
