First hearing of Ziyath’s appeal case to be held tomorrow

The first hearing on appeal of Criminal Court’s 15 day remand order on the former Managing Director of Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC)، Abdulla Ziyath، has been scheduled for tomorrow.
Ziyath’s detention was appealed in High Court on 28th October 2015.
Ziyath’s appeal hearing will be held in High Court at 1 pm tomorrow.
Former MD of MMPRC، Abdulla Ziyath was arrested on 23rd October 2015 for staying silent and not cooperating with the investigation of two cases، one in which MMPRC lent a resort to a third party and another in which official documents of police were confiscated from Ziyath’s residence. Before that day، he had been summoned to the police station and questioned on three separate occasions.
On the 26th of this month، Al-Ustad Hussain Shameem said on behalf of GP Adeeb and MD of MMPRC، Abdulla Ziyath’s legal team، that although President Yameen said that Ziyath was arrested for staying silent to not cooperate with the investigation، remaining silent is a basic right and arresting upon the basis of a basic right is worrisome.
Ziyath was summoned to the Police Station and questioned about MMPRC giving a resort to a third party and official documents being confiscated from Ziyath’s residence.
His Excellency President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom said while addressing the nation that a number of facilities required by the police were being received through MMPRC and that official documents in the letterhead of police were confiscated from MD of MMPRC، Ziyath’s residence.
However، Shameem has said that President’s remarks about documents being confiscated from Ziyath’s residence are true، which were “normal documents” given to Ziyath by VP Adeeb.
However، President Yameen has said that he does “not believe that documents of the police institution should be kept at Ziyath’s residence”.
