MPL Increases Storage Capacity to 5,100 TEUs, Enhances Operations for Ramadan

Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has announced a significant expansion of its storage capacity, increasing it to 5,100 TEUs (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units). This marks a notable improvement from the 3,600 TEUs capacity at the start of last year, addressing one of the biggest challenges faced in port operations.
Speaking on state media, MPL’s Chief Operating Officer, Ilyas Mohamed, described this increase as a major advancement that has not been achieved in a long time. He emphasized that MPL has been working extensively to improve storage and logistics efficiency, ensuring that operations run smoothly, especially in preparation for the high import volume expected during Ramadan.
To accommodate the surge in imported goods, MPL has taken several key measures. One of the most notable initiatives is the allocation of a dedicated warehouse for perishable cargo, such as food items that are in high demand during Ramadan. Other imported goods have been relocated to Hulhumale, where they will be processed and cleared to ease congestion at the main port. Additionally, MPL has opened an extra clearance gate in the yard to further streamline operations.
Ilyas also highlighted that MPL has increased its workforce specifically for Ramadan to ensure quicker cargo handling and clearance. This move aims to prevent delays and ensure that essential goods reach businesses and consumers in a timely manner.
With these enhancements, MPL is confident that it is well-prepared to handle the increased import volume and facilitate a smooth flow of goods during the holy month.
