Maldives introduces green license plates for eco-friendly vehicles

In a move to promote sustainable transportation, the government has announced the introduction of green license plates for environmentally friendly vehicles.
The Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, Mohamed Ameen confirmed the initiative, marking it as the first of its kind in the nation's history. The new green plates, designed to make electric and eco-friendly vehicles more easily identifiable, will feature white lettering for private electric cars and yellow for electric taxis.
Minister Ameen shared a preview of the new "EV plates" on social media, inviting public support for the transition toward a cleaner, greener future.
This change aligns with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s environmental commitments, including recent pledges made ahead of COP29, and underscores the government’s broader vision of establishing a green transport system.
Currently, Maldives uses black plates for private vehicles, yellow for taxis, white for military, and blue for diplomatic vehicles.
The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation meanwhile is gearing up to launch a fully electric taxi service, with 150 electric vehicles soon to be imported.
