The Election Commission (EC) has granted permission to 85 international observers and monitors for the Presidential Election on September 23.
EC member Ahmed Akram said on Wednesday that 51 observators and 34 monitors from different countries, international organizations and independent institutions have been authorised to take part in the presidential elections.
Maldives Immigration has revealed that those under Business VISA will be granted permission to take part in the elections. However, the department warned that anyone attempting to do so under a Tourist VISA would be deported.
While the United Nations had continuously called on the Maldivian government to conduct an independent election, so far they have not decided to take part in the election proceedings. In all the previous elections, the UN had provided administrative and technical assistance to the Maldives.
The EC is yet to reveal the number of representatives from the candidates taking part in the election.
