Ex-President Nasheed’s candidature, valid: ministers

Youth Minister Ahmed Mahloof and Tourism Minister Ali Waheed have expressed their belief that former president Mohamed Nasheed should be able to contest for parliament.
Their sentiments come after Dhidhdhoo constituency MP Abdulatheef Moosa on Monday submitted a motion to bar former presidents from competing in parliamentary elections.
Moosa’s motions has been criticized as both unconstitutional and ‘insubordinate’, the latter by the Jumhooree Party’s parliamentary group.
The Jumhooree Party, a government coalition partner and the party to which MP Moosa belongs, said that the lawmaker acted independently.
Jumhooree Party parliamentary group leader Abdulla Riyaz said that MP Moosa had not discussed the motion prior to submitting it, but the party has asked him to withdraw it.
The Jumhooree Party and the Maldivian Democratic Party, which was founded by Nasheed, are partners in the coalition.
Nasheed is contesting in the party’s primary ahead of the People’s Majlis ballots, slated for April.
