Contesting for all 87 seats will not ensure majority for MDP, says leader

Former President and Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s leader Mohamed Nasheed has stated that the party will not win majority seats in Parliament, if it were to contest all 87 constituencies.
Nasheed stated this at a meeting of his party’s national council meeting on Saturday night where the party decided to run for all 87 seats in Parliament.
The former President also stated that the party’s main determination is to maintain newly-elected President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s government rather than winning the majority of seats in Parliament. Nasheed went on to urge all members of the congress to make this their priority as well.
Nasheed further said that the party had initially decided to contest for 61 seats, including 10 seats in Male’ constituency, seven in Addu constituency and various others. However, since the other three parties –Jumhooree Party (JP), Adhaalath Party (AP) and Maumoon Reform Movement (MRM)- had not responded to the party’s proposals regarding contesting for seats in the Parliamentary Election, Nasheed stated that he believes it is best if MDP runs for all 87 constituencies.
“I support the congress’s decision to run for all 87 constituencies and I don’t believe we will win majority seats just because we will contest for all the seats. However, I support this decision taken by the congress for the best” said the former President.
Nasheed went on to say that President Solih is updated on a regular basis on the discussions held about the approaching Parliamentary Election, which has been scheduled for March 2019.
In the last parliamentary elections, then opposition MDP won 26 seats when they contested for all constituencies in Parliament. Then ruling coalition- comprising of JP, AP and Maldives Development Alliance- won 53 seats.
