High Court orders to temporarily halt Nasheed

The High Court has ordered Hulhumale’ Court to temporarily halt the trial against former President Mohamed Nasheed, for the unconstitutional arrest of Chief Judge of Criminal Court Abdullah Mohamed.
The trial is to be temporarily halted until a decision is made on the case appealed to High Court by Nasheed.
The High Court’s temporary order details that continuing with the trial before a decision is made on the case appealed by Nasheed might obstruct ensuring Nasheed’s rights, and cause him damage.
The order further states that delays by High Court in issuing the order in relation to Nasheed’s appeal could mean that the purpose of the order is not achieved.
High Court also said that the Prosecutor General’s Office had not objected to the temporary order.
Nasheed’s legal team has raised several procedural points, which state that Hulhumale’ Court cannot hold trials as the Court was established illegally. The team has also claimed that the Court Order to Police to present Nasheed in Court was illegal.
Nasheed’s legal team presented the procedural points in detail at today’s hearing.
High Court Judge Shuaib Hussain Zakariyya said that the next and final hearing for this case will be held on Thursday, 8 November at 10:15am.
