Parliament Committee on Independent Institutions has closed off from the public its enquiries regarding allegations that the police obstructed the elections on Saturday, 19 October.
The committee has so far summoned the Elections Commission (EC), Prosecutor General (PG), the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) and the Police Integrity Commission (PIC).
Sun is aware the committee decided to close off today’s meeting because MPs who do not sit in the committee were in attendance.
A member of the committee told Sun that the committee has plans to inquire PIC and PG about the steps they would take over the alleged obstruction of the election.
HRCM earlier said the police had acted against the law on Saturday and had no mandate to obstruct elections.
PG has stated that the matter has been brought to the institution’s attention. PIC said the commission is now investigating the case.
