The State Trading Organization (STO) have begun selling garlic to the Maldivian market amid growing demands in Ramadan.
Currently, a kilo of garlic from STO People’s Choice is sold at MVR 45 whereas a kilo of the vegetable is available between MVR 90 and MVR 120 across local market.
STO has been working to maintain the prices of fast-moving food items during Ramadan, as the demand for them surges during the Islamic holy month owing to increased meal production in local households.
Besides garlic, STO is maintaining affordable prices for other fast moving items including onion, egg, potato, lime, and coconut.
STO set prices of these items by reviewing their current market value. The current rates of these items sold by STO are:
Onion: MVR 335 for one gunnysack, MVR 14 per kilogram
Egg: MVR 350 per case, MVR 2 per egg
Potato: MVR 515 for one gunnysack, MVR 25 per kilogram
Besides STO People’s Choice, these items will be available at the same prices from STO’s Hulhumale’ outlets and wholesale sites.
Meanwhile, STO has been gearing up to import other necessary food items to meet the growing demands.
