Opposition questions Foreign Minister on Masood Imad’s recent comments

The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has submitted a formal question to Foreign Minister Dr. Abdulla Khaleel regarding the conduct of Maldivian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Masood Imad, following a series of controversial remarks and diplomatic actions that have drawn criticism both locally and abroad.
The controversy stems from an interview Masood gave to Sri Lanka’s Daily News, in which he described the visa process for Maldivians as discriminatory and corrupt. He likened the treatment of Maldivians by Sri Lankan immigration officials to “stepmotherly” behavior, questioned racial bias favoring “white people,” and alleged that visa agents receive preferential treatment due to suspected financial incentives.
Masood further warned that the Maldivian government may revise its visa policy for Sri Lankan professionals if the situation does not improve. This perceived threat has sparked concern over the abandonment of diplomatic norms and bilateral negotiation.
In a post on X, MDP MP Meekail Ahmed Naseem condemned the remarks as “thoughtless” and called for Masood’s immediate recall. He also summoned Foreign Minister Khaleel to clarify the government’s position on the matter.
High Commissioner @MasoodImadMv’s recent comments about the Sri Lankan Government reflect tactlessness and poor judgment — and warrants his immediate recall. I have summoned the Foreign Minister to clarify the Government’s stand on the issue: pic.twitter.com/j4oVsQVOGl

Meekail’s question to the minister highlighted the risk of undermining diplomatic principles by publicly threatening a neighboring country and engaging with its opposition. The High Commissioner met with Namal Rajapaksa, son of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and a senior figure in the opposition Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), just days after the interview. The meeting was publicized by Namal on X, further fueling concerns about Masood’s diplomatic judgment.
Despite repeated requests, the Foreign Ministry has not issued an official statement since Thursday. Calls and messages to the ministry’s media officer have gone unanswered, leaving the government’s stance unclear.
Experienced diplomats have also criticized Masood’s conduct, stating that his remarks and political engagements are “alien to diplomacy” and risk straining bilateral ties.
