One of two youths arrested from Male’ with over one-kilo of drugs has again pleaded leniency for his remand, citing mental illness.
Mohamed Evan Hamid, 23, Valuthereyge, GDh. Madaveli and Mohamed Raid Ali As’ar, 31, H. Sakeena Manzil were arrested on January 5th in a counter-narcotics operation conducted by the Drug Enforcement Department and Counter Narcotics Intelligence. The Police said over one kilo of drugs were seized during a search of an apartment in Male’ following their arrest.
Both suspects were initially remanded in custody for seven days upon presentation before the court.
During the remand hearing, Raid requested to be placed under house arrest, stating that he suffers from serious mental health issues and claiming that he has previously been exploited to carry out criminal activities.
However, the court refused to be lenient with respect to his remand.
A second remand hearing was held on Tuesday, following the expiration of the initial remand period, during which the court extended Raid’s remand by 30 days.
Raid again requested to be placed under house arrest, stating that he suffers from serious mental health issues and claiming that he has previously been exploited to carry out criminal activities.
The presiding judge said there is no reason warranting Raid’s release from custody based on the evidence submitted in the case.
No information regarding Evan’s remand was mentioned in the remand order.
