Nasheed allowed travel under privileges as former ruler: Corrections

Maldives Correctional Services (MCS) has stated that former President Mohamed Nasheed was allowed to travel under the privileges granted to him as the former ruler of the country.
Speaking to Miadhu, Commissioner of Prisons, Ahmed Husham said that the surgery can be carried out in Male’, noting that an ordinary prisoner will have to undergo the surgery locally.
“The Attorney General advised the Home Minister that as Nasheed was a former President, there were certain rights and privileges, under which he can be sent abroad. Therefore, Home Minister instructed Correctional Services to arrange travel for Nasheed,” he said.
He added that the travel documents will be finalized soon and if the family wished Nasheed can depart tonight.
“The family had already booked the tickets. Therefore, we estimate that he can leave tonight,” Husham said.
The Government has given a 30-day period for the former President to carry out his spinal surgery, which can be extended on doctor’s recommendation.
