President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, on Friday, has met with the Secretary General of the Commonwealth Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey.
The meeting was held in London as part of the President’s ongoing visit to the United Kingdom.
During the meeting, the Secretary General reiterated the Commonwealth’s dedication to assisting the Maldives in its key priority areas.
The President underscored the Maldives’ role as a leading voice among Small Island Developing States in promoting common goals on global platforms. He also shared the country's vision of attaining developed nation status by 2040, stressing the need for ongoing collaboration with the Commonwealth to help achieve this ambition.
Their discussion covered a broad spectrum of mutual interests, such as democratic governance, trade and investment opportunities, and the sustainable growth of the fisheries and tourism sectors.
The President’s Office states the meeting marked an important step in deepening the partnership between the Maldives and the Commonwealth.
As part of his ongoing visit to the UK, President Muizzu has attended a private audience with King Charles III. Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs of the UK David Lammy also paid a courtesy call on the President.
