PGO Cancels Immunity Deals in MMRPC Corruption Case

The Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) has annulled immunity deals with those implicated in the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) graft which saw millions in state funds embezzled.
The agreements, established when former Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem was in office, granted immunity from prosecution to former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb, Ahmed Ishfah Ali, Mohamed Allaam Latheef, and Mohamed Hussain.
According to the PGO, the Prosecutor General, Abbas Shareef decided to terminate immunity and cooperation agreements with all four individuals as the purpose of the agreements is not being met. While the agreements were originally designed to secure cooperation in investigating the graft and recovering stolen funds, authorities have noted a lack of cooperation by the involved individuals, leading to the termination of the deals, PGO said.
In a similar move, a cooperation agreement with MMPRC’s former Managing Director, Abdulla Ziyath, was also canceled in August 2022.
The PGO said the Maldives Police Service as well as the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) have been instructed to resume investigation into cases involving all four in cases that could not be previously pursued due to the immunity deals. The authorities have been instructed to expedite submissions of these cases to the PGO for prosecution.
While a 20-year prison sentence had been handed to Adeeb, former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had controversially granted him a presidential pardon with only three days remaining on his term. Similarly, a presidential pardon was also extended to Ziyath, who was under house arrest while serving a 31-year prison sentence for corruption.
