Shaweed to run uncontested for Maldives FA presidency
With only one candidate for the post, FAM will be holding a referendum for their presidential voting. While FAM’s new charter dictated that candidates must have the support of minimum five football clubs, Shaweed is backed by six First Division teams. They include Club Valencia, who had previously opposed Shaweed and had been presumed to nominate a presidential candidate to challenge. It had also been presumed that Valencia would nominate a candidate for the previous elections, prior to FIFA ousting former President Ilham Ahmed and delegating the reins of FAM to their founded Normalisation Committee. FAM had also taken action against Club Valencia recently, on grounds of sending a letter of misinformation to FIFA regarding FAM’s Extraordinary Congress. FAM’s Electoral Committee will review Shaweed’s credentials and approve his candidacy. Under the new charter, the presidential candidate will submit a list of candidates for the Executive Committee. The elections will be held on October 22. A shareholder of Maldives’ renowned trade company V.B. Brothers, Shaweed had officially ventured into the field of football with the founding of V.B. Sports Club in 2007. He had played a prominent role in making the club into Maldives’ strongest football team at the time. Later, Shaweed had also played a prominent role in winning the 2012 elections for the then President Ilham Ahmed. After his removal by FIFA, Shaweed was appointed as Chairman of the Normalisation Committee founded by FIFA in December 2014. Under Shaweed’s leadership, the Normalisation Committee had approved FAM’s new charter within the period allocated by FIFA and proceeded the association to its next round of elections. He had also founded the Dhivehi Premier League, brokered a mega deal with Ooredoo to sponsor the league, and increased revenue for First Division clubs. Shaweed had revolutionized the Maldives football, introduced the People’s Cup, and secured several friendly matches for the Maldives National Football Team. In addition to his duties as president of the Maldives Olympic Committee, he is also a member of the AFC Executive Committee and the International Olympic Committee’s Finance Committee.
