Parliamentarian Ahmed Haitham has submitted a request to Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed to summon senior officials of Bank of Maldives (BML) to the parliament over the lack of accountability towards the public.
In a letter addressed to the speaker, Parliamentarian Haitham said several questions and complaints have been raised by the public over BML, which involves unexplained deductions from bank accounts and multiple deductions for the same transaction. Noting BML has not been able provide answers regarding these serious problems, Haitham called on the speaker to summon senior officials of BML to the Parliamentary Committee on State Owned Enterprises (SOEs) for questioning.
Meanwhile, in response to the concerns over unexplained deductions and transactions, Public Relations Manager of BML Mohamed Saeed said the mysterious transactions are the result of fraudulent or ‘phishing’ emails. He affirmed there is no wrongdoing by the bank in these transactions.
Several people have been expressing concerns over double transactions and other unexplained deductions from BML accounts.
