The first dedicated Metabolic Centre in the Maldives has officially opened.
The centre, developed by the Maldives Neuro Endocrine Medical Facility, was inaugurated by the Minister of Health, Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim. The Metabolic Centre will monitor, diagnose and treat metabolic disorders such as diabetes, high cholesterol, and hypertension.
The Metabolic Centre’s Senior Consultant, Dr Mohamed Wisham said the decision to establish a Diabetes and Metabolic Disorder Centre was driven by the lack of holistic treatment approaches across health centres and hospitals in the Maldives. The centre will look for specific disease complexes and determine if certain health issues are linked to metabolic diseases, and provide an environment where the issues can be effectively managed.
Dr Wisham said the centre has a registrar, and noted that a Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CMG) system has also been introduced at the centre. The CGM system makes glucose monitoring easier for those with diabetes and other diabetic complications, he noted.
The centre will serve patients of all ages, and has launched a patient education guide and diabetic education guide to support patients manage their conditions.
The centre is located on Lily Magu in Male’ City.
