Government funding fails to spark club interest in FAM tournament

Despite the government giving MVR 10 million to the first division clubs, they show little interest in the Football Association of Maldives (FAM) tournament.
After postponing the football season that was scheduled to start this month due to FIFA instructions, the FAM sent invitations to clubs last week to participate in a tournament outside the official calendar.
FAM stated that FIFA would grant permission for the tournament based on the number of participating teams.
According to Mihaaru News, only three clubs responded positively to FAM's invitation.
Apart from Maziya, Odi Sports, and TC Sports Victory, no other club has confirmed their participation.
The government, through the Sports Ministry, has already given MVR 10 million to the first division's 10 clubs, at a rate of MVR one million per club.
Despite this financial support from the government, most clubs are not interested in participating in the tournament.
FAM had been in discussions with FIFA about permission to hold a tournament that would not affect relegation or club rankings or fall within the official season.
FAM's Acting General Secretary Mohamed Shujau previously stated that these discussions were held with FIFA to provide an opportunity to select the national team through competitive matches, as the national team has important matches in June.
"We requested FIFA, since there are important national team matches in June. We shared the importance of holding a short tournament to assess players' performance for the national team selection, especially considering that clubs have already made significant investments," said Shujau.
