621 ballot boxes for local council elections, two abroad

Elections Commission (EC) has decided to place 621 ballot boxes for the upcoming Local Council and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) election scheduled for April 4th,
The Commission, on Thursday, publicized the details of the locations of ballot boxes for April’s election.
In this regard, a total of 621 ballot boxes will be placed: 321 in atolls, 240 in Male’ area for Male’ residents and islanders living in Male’ area, three in industrial locations, five in prisons, 50 at resorts and two abroad. The ballot boxes abroad will be placed in Sri Lanka and Malaysia.
According to EC, councilors and WDC members will be elected in a total of 225 constituencies during the election.
A total of 294,937 people are eligible to vote in the election: 144,527 women and 150,410 men.
Notably, political parties have begun campaigning for the election. While ruling PNC held its primary for the election to select candidates who will contest in the election on the party ticket in December, opposition MDP is scheduled to hold its primary on January 16th.
Prior to the election, the PNC-dominated parliament has brought changes to the composition of councils to dissolve atoll councils and reduce councilors in islands with smaller populations.
