President inspects Giraavaru Falhu land reclamation project

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has inspected progress on the government’s land reclamation project at Giraavaru Falhu, part of efforts to address a housing shortage identified as a key priority for his administration.
On arrival at the site, the President was received by the Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure, Dr Abdulla Muththalib, alongside cabinet ministers, members of parliament, and senior officials from the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), including its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed.
During the visit, officials briefed the President on the latest developments, and he inspected ongoing reclamation works.
Under the second phase of the project, MACL aims to reclaim 97.15 hectares of land, with 35 hectares already completed. In the first phase, Maldives Fund Management Corporation Limited (MFMC) reclaimed 70 hectares. Combined, the two phases are expected to yield 167.15 hectares of reclaimed land at Giraavaru Falhu, of which 105 hectares have been completed so far.
President Dr Muizzu has been providing regular updates on the project via his official account on X. In a post on 21 March, he said that reclamation and land plot survey works are expected to conclude by the end of April, with the handover of land plots scheduled to begin in June.
He also announced that reclamation works commenced on 30 January 2026. In a subsequent update on 13 February, he confirmed that operations were being carried out simultaneously using two dredgers: the Queen of the Netherlands, with a capacity of 35,000 cubic metres, and the Oranje, with a capacity of 22,000 cubic metres.
