True independence cannot be gained unless fear of the Police is overcome: Nasheed
Speaking during a meeting held by the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) supporters held in Dharubaaruge last night, Nasheed alleged that the people presently in control of the Police believe that the institution can be made a place feared by the people, hence made to surrender many of their rights and succumb to such intimidation. He further claimed that the government was attempting to function while maintaining a state of fear among the people. “Their words are in no means hollow or empty. That is the philosophy they believe in. They think they can force the people to relinquish their many rights through intimidation and fear,” Nasheed added. The former President also detailed that numerous members of the police and military were present similar to former Head of Police Intelligence Department Chief Superintendent Mohamed Hameed who was arrested for sharing confidential information of Police to the MDP report published by the party on the events leading up to the transfer of power on February 7. “I know many police and military officers of the same frame of mind as Hameed.” Nasheed further called on Hameed to remain resolute. He labeled Hameed as a true officer among the military and the police and called on for the ousting of “traitors” amid the security forces. Similar to most nights, Nasheed stressed that he would reclaim his presidency. He added that he would not use lack of finance as an excuse as he was well aware of the way to run the country. Nasheed claimed that MDP would not function against Islam and would strive to withhold the sanctity of the mosques. He further stressed that the people would not be swayed by the words of the people who use religion as a weapon.
