President Nasheed must be impeached: Dhiyana
Dhiyana, who was apprehended following Thursday night's opposition protests calling for the immediate release of the illegally detained Judge Abdulla Mohamed. Dhiyana was arrested and taken to the police headquarters with Villi-Maafannu MP Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik, along with two other women whilst sitting at the republic square during the protest. Dhiyana gave the statement at her residence at 2:30 that morning after they were all released through the rear entrance of the police headquarters without raising the media attention to the scene. She also said that it was deeply regrettable to call for President Nasheed’s impeachment as she has had the pleasure of working with him very closely. “I advise him to resign from office with dignity and go home” the former Attorney General said. The Parliament does not have what it takes to pass a no confidence vote against President Nasheed despite his government’s blatant disregard for court orders, she added. Dhiyana, who still remains a member of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) even though her husband, former MP and prominent businessman Abdulla Jabir had changed to Jumhooree Party recently, said that she wanted to give the government a ‘strong message’ and that her participation was to show her disapproval towards the infringements of individual rights by the government and also to prove that even those who do not go out to such protests, will no longer remain silent. Dhiyana also described the imprisonment of Judge Abdulla by the government against the court orders as a direct “attack on the state of Maldives”. Dhiyana, who served as the first attorney general of this administration said that she will not stay on the sidelines and watch whilst the Maldivian state is being attacked and the rule of law disrespected. In response to the questions of her loyalty to the president over her recent resignation as SAARC Secretary General, she said that no one can be loyal in politics as “Chemical Ali was to Saddam Hussain”. She also added that whichever political party that we may belong to, we all have an obligation to defend the constitution. “I did not do this for any political benefit” she added.
