The 55 men from Thinadhoo previously sentenced to detainment until trial ends have been released and the case sent back to the Prosecutor General’s office after the state lawyer failed to turn up at court on Saturday.
A total of 89 men from Thinadhoo are accused of taking part in arson on 8th February 2012 following the overthrowing of President Nasheed’s government the previous day.
Criminal court said that the hearing scheduled to be held at 1000hrs was discussed with the PG، and it was told they would cooperate.
However، when the PG’s office was asked by letter to assign lawyers for the case، the reply was that it was not possible، the court said.
Criminal court said that the case will be accepted again when the PG’s office files it again after assigning lawyers.
The charges faced by the 89 accused are rioting at the Police Station، Secretariat of the Atoll Council and Thinadhoo Court on 8th February 2012 along with others، and damaging police property and acts of arson against said structures.
All 89 deny the charges.
