Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, the President of the Maldives paid a surprise visit to the International Nekton Mission, to offer assistance to ocean researchers as they looked for solutions that would help reveal the mysteries of the deep.
The President is aware that currently there are no maps of the Maldivian waters below 30 meters, but this is developing rapidly with the Nekton Mission.
In the previous two days, the four Maldivian aquanauts who descended to the 500 meters below the surface met President Solih on board. Moreover, he observed the information that was gathered and is currently being analyzed by Nekton marine scientists and experts in mapping.
Ministers from the administration who were with President Solih emphasized the importance of Nekton’s research for the country’s knowledge of what dwells in the deep ocean.
In this regard, Minister of Fisheries Hussain Rasheed Hassan stated “the results that we get, the species that we see, the underwater features of the Maldives and the historical level of land in those years are critical things.”
Furthermore, Minister of Environment Aminath Shauna noted that “as Maldivians we need to know more about our oceans, more about what is happening to our oceans and the health of our oceans as well and I think it is critical that knowledge data, the evidence you find , stays here”.
In addition, Nekton has pledged all data and samples gathered on the expedition remain the property of the Maldives Government.
