The Criminal Court on Tuesday ordered for a car driver accused of fleeing the scene after hitting an elderly pedestrian at a zebra crossing in Hulhumale’ to be remanded in custody of the police for 15 days.
The accident took place at around 09:30 pm Sunday near the MPL Tower in Hithigas Magu, Hulhumale’ Phase II.
Khalid Abdulla Ali, 57, Nice, Dhadimagu, Fuvahmulah City, is accused of hitting a 63-year-old man who was using a zebra crossing to get to the other side of the road with his car. The accident left the elderly man with a broken leg.
According to police, Khalid failed to stop, but fled the scene.
Khalid, who was arrested on Monday after the police reviewed CCTV footage to identify him, was presented before a judge at the Criminal Court for his remand hearing on Tuesday.
The court remanded him in custody of the police for 15 days.
During the hearing, Khalid told the court that he suffered from illness. The court therefore instructed the police to allow Khalid access to medical care as recommended by a doctor.
The police suspended Khalid’s driver’s license following the accident.
