The main government hospital, Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) states the first 20 doctors who completed their MBBS from Maldives National University (MNU) are set to commence service after completing their internship.
The first batch of medical students from MNU’s School of Medicine graduated on October 31st, 2024. They are mandated to complete a one-year internship before they can commence services in the health sector.
IGMH, on Thursday, announced that the graduates have completed their internship, congratulating the 20 young doctors who have tirelessly cared for patients, responded to emergencies, and grown through hands-on learning, turning knowledge into compassionate care.
The hospital also extended gratitude to all the mentors, clinicians, and supporters who guided them throughout the internship.
“The Maldives now welcomes a new generation of doctors, ready to heal, lead, and inspire,” the hospital added.
MNU’s School of Medicine was founded in 2018. The school offers a five-year undergraduate medical degree, Doctor of Medicine (MD) in line with the curriculum of Malaysia’s national university, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). The program is implemented under the technical guidance of UKM.
The fee for the course USD 1,000 per month and is covered under the government’s free degree scheme.
The school was established with assistance from the Pakistani government.
The first batch of graduates completed their surgery model at IGMH, while they also underwent hands-on training at ADK Hospital.
