Pres appoints minister as new STELCO MD

State Electric Company (STELCO) managing director Abdul-Shukoor has been removed from his post, and replaced by the minister at president’s office Ahmed Zuhoor.
Meanwhile, Abdul-Shukoor was moved to a ministerial post at the environment ministry, in another top-level government reshuffle by President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom on Sunday.
During Yameen’s presidency, Zuhoor has served as the commissioner of customs, health minister, as well the youth minister. He is also the chair of Maldives’ economic council.
Zuhoor was moved to his latest post at the president’s office when he was briefly serving as the home minister.
Abdul-Shukoor has been STELCO’s managing director since June 9, 2014.
He is an expert on energy sources and energy usage, and has been a consultant on power management, on various occasions over the years.
In late May – just before the Ramadan – president Yameen reassigned some top-level government positions and brought changes to the heads of government institutions.
In this reshuffle, high court registrar Hassan Ali was removed from his post and appointed as the new managing director of ‘Aasandha’ – Maldives’ universal healthcare scheme.
Just a day before appointing Hassan Ali as the managing director of ‘Aasandha’, Maumoon Abdul-Samad, who was serving at the post before, was moved to the housing ministry as a deputy minister.
A week before these changes were brought, the CEO of ‘Aasandha’ parent company – National Social Protection Agency (NSPA), Mujthaba Jaleel was dismissed from his post.
The president has also nominated Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) leader Mohamed “Colonel” Nasheed as Maldives’ new ambassador to Thailand on Sunday, and his name has been forwarded to the parliament for approval.
