Dhidhdhoo Land Reclamation Dredger Arrives; Latheef Says It Will Bring a ‘Revolution’ in the Island’s Development

Abdul Latheef Mohamed (Latheebey), the Member of Parliament for the Dhidhdhoo constituency, has announced that the world’s third-largest dredger is currently en route to Dhidhdhoo, Haa Alifu Atoll, to carry out the land reclamation required for the development of an airport and to reclaim additional land planned for the island.
When questioned about the circulating social media reports concerning the world’s third-largest dredger heading to the island for the airport project and other land reclamation needs, Latheef confirmed that the reports were “true” and stated that he is working to bring a “development revolution” to Dhidhdhoo.
Latheef further stated that this development will be brought to Dhidhdhoo during the administration of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, and that this reality will be evident soon.
“The question young people and people of various ages on the island ask me is whether the setback in development that Dhidhdhoo, the capital of Haa Alifu Atoll, experienced over the past five years can be reversed, whether Dhidhdhoo can be maintained as the main development hub of Haa Alifu Atoll, and whether what was lost can be recovered. The people feel this. The assurance I give is that President Muizzu will bring that back to the people of Dhidhdhoo, that this is bringing a revolution in Dhidhdhoo’s development, and that this is the beginning of that revolution,” Latheef said in a statement.
Latheef stated that the dredger is expected to arrive in the Maldives on December 22nd. He added that the land reclamation work will commence shortly after the dredger is brought to Dhidhdhoo.
Under the Dhidhdhoo land reclamation project, the government has decided to add 111 hectares of land to the island.
