The Maldives and Egypt have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on political consultations, further strengthening bilateral relations between both countries.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the MoU, signed as part of Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Abdulla Khaleel’s ongoing visit to Egypt, formalises the consultation mechanism established between the two countries since 2019.
During official talks held in Cairo, Foreign Minister Dr Abdulla Khaleel and his Egyptian counterpart Dr Badr Abdelatty reaffirmed the longstanding bonds of friendship and cooperation between the Maldives and Egypt. Dr Khaleel conveyed appreciation for Egypt’s continued assistance over the years in the fields of education and human resource development.
The discussions also focused on opportunities to expand cooperation in the health sector and strengthen collaboration through the sharing of expertise. Dr Khaleel expressed the Maldives’ commitment to advancing economic and trade ties with Egypt, highlighting potential areas for collaboration in agriculture trade and food security. Both Ministers also noted the scope to deepening cooperation in tourism, including increasing arrivals between the two countries and fostering people-to-people exchanges.
The MoU on political consultations was signed by Foreign Minister Dr Khaleel and Egyptian Foreign Minister Dr Abdelatty during the meeting.
Dr Khaleel travelled to Egypt for an official visit on 17 October. The Foreign Ministry said the visit will strengthen the longstanding friendship between both countries. Minister Khaleel is accompanied by Secretary, Dr Hala Hameed, and Additional Secretary Khadeeja Najeeha at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
