Cigarette thief fined MVR 32K for removing roofing sheets to break into Male’ store

A man who broke into a store in Male’ by removing roofing sheets and stole cigarettes has been sentenced to home confinement and ordered to pay a hefty fine.
Ibrahim Safwan, a native of R. Rasgatheemu, was accused of breaking into Goveli, a store located in the market district of Male’ City, in early 2021.
He was pressed with two charges over the break-in; theft and destruction of private property.
Safwan had pled guilty to both charges under a plea deal with the Prosecutor General’s Office.
Criminal Court Judge Ibrahim Ihusan issued his sentence in the case last week.
While Safwan was sentenced to four months in prison for theft and 18 days in prison for destruction of private property, the judge converted the sentences to fines and home confinement in light of the plea deal.
As such, his sentence for theft was reduced to four days of home confinement and a MVR 28,400 fine, while his sentence for destruction of property was reduced to a fine of MVR 3,600.
With this, Safwan was sentenced to a total of four days of home confinement and ordered to pay a fine of MVR 32,000.
The break-in in question took place after midnight on January 21, 2021. Safwan admitted to removing roofing sheets to break into the Goveli store, and stealing 30 cartons of Camel Hard cigarettes, two cartons of Camel Light cigarettes, and eight additional packs of cigarettes.
