Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with the leaders of various political parties of the Maldives.
The Prime Minister, who is on a state visit to the Maldives at the invitation of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, met with the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), with the party’s Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail, and the party’s President Abdulla Shahid attending the discussions.
Prime Minister Modi also met with the Leader of Jumhooree Party (JP) Qasim Ibrahim, Leader of Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) Ahmed Siyam Mohamed and Maldives National Party (MNP)’s President Mohamed Nazim.
In a post on X following the meetings, Prime Minister Modi said the participation of various leaders from the political spectrum reflected bipartisan support for the strong and longstanding friendship between India and the Maldives. He also emphasised that the shared values of both countries contribute to this important relationship.
“Had a meaningful meeting with members of different political parties of the Maldives. The participation of leaders across the political spectrum underscores the bipartisan support for the strong and time-tested India-Maldives friendship. Our shared values continue to guide this important partnership,” he wrote.
Former President Mohamed Nasheed also paid a courtesy call on the Indian Prime Minister. In a separate post, Prime Minister Modi noted that Nasheed has long been a vocal advocate for closer ties between both nations. He said the meeting centered around discussions on the Maldives’ role as a valuable pillar of the ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and the Mahasagar vision. The Prime Minister assured that India will continue to provide assistance to the Maldives in the fields of capacity building and development.
“Met the former President of Maldives, Mr Mohamed Nasheed. He has always been a strong advocate of deeper India-Maldives friendship. Spoke about how the Maldives will always be a valued pillar of our ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and Mahasagar vision. India will keep supporting Maldives through capacity building and developmental cooperation,” he wrote.
Prime Minister Modi arrived in the Maldives on Friday for a two-day State Visit at the invitation of Maldives President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. He is scheduled to depart from the Maldives on Saturday evening.
