Vote counting begins as polls close across Maldives

The counting of votes has begun following the closure of the majority of polling stations in today’s election.
A total of 588 ballot boxes were deployed for this election, including 240 in the Greater Malé area and 322 across the atolls. In addition, 21 ballot boxes were placed in resorts, while five were allocated for prisons.
Voting continued until 5:00 pm today, after which most polling stations closed. In accordance with regulations, the counting process commenced for several boxes 30 minutes after their official closure.
However, reports indicate that voting is still ongoing in a few locations due to a significant number of voters remaining in queues at the scheduled closing time.
A total of 294,876 individuals were eligible to cast their ballots in this election. According to the latest data released by the Elections Commission, voter turnout had exceeded 60 per cent by 4:00 pm.
