ITB pivotal in Maldives’ tourism sector development: Hussain Afeef

The Chairman of the Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI), Hussain Afeef described the ITB Berlin Fair as the greatest contributor for the advancement of the Maldives’ tourism sector, progressing the sector to the globally renowned brand it is today.
In an exclusive interview with PSM News at the ITB Berlin Fair in 2026, MATI Chairman Hussein Afeef highlighted the importance of the Maldives taking part in such a large marketplace. He noted that although tourism was previously limited to resorts, guest houses and homestay tourism has now been introduced, further expanding the sector.
“The changes brought about to the Maldives tourism sector, were they not from coming to these places? ITB has been going on for 60 years. We have participated for about 45 years. Those are the changes which have been brought about as a result of coming here.” Hussein Afeef stated.
He reiterated the importance of showcasing these changes to the world at the ITB Berlin fair. He described the fair as the largest platform of its kind globally, with individuals gathering to market guesthouses and hotels from around the globe. He stated that displaying Maldivian products to the world in this market is absolutely necessary, and that missing this opportunity would be a great loss.
“We are here to promote the Maldives. To boost tourist arrivals into the country. To showcase various resorts and guesthouses and advertise local products.” Afeef said.
At the ITB Berlin Fair this year, 159 individuals from 67 companies are representing the Maldives on this global stage, including famous resorts, guesthouses, safari vessels and travel agencies.
