President Dr Mohamed Muizzu will raise concerns about visa difficulties faced by Maldivians residing in Sri Lanka during his upcoming visit to the country.
The state visit is scheduled from May 3 to 6, at the invitation of Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
Chief Government Spokesperson at the President’s Office Mohamed Hussain Shareef said visa discussions are ongoing and began two years ago when the two presidents met in Dubai. He noted that complications arose due to tighter rules following the Easter Sunday attacks in Sri Lanka.
While addressing these challenges will be a key focus during the President’s state visit, issues to be discussed include high visa costs, which is around USD 200 per application for extensions up to one year, a USD 75 medical fee, along with a USD 1,000 deposit per person.
The President is also scheduled to meet with Maldivians living in Sri Lanka to discuss their concerns.
As part of the visit, an investment forum will also be held to connect Maldivian and Sri Lankan businesses. At least seven agreements are expected to be signed during the visit.
