Former President Mohamed Nasheed has said that his party’s government cannot be toppled and that a coup is no longer possible in the Maldives.
Speaking at a rally on Friday evening, Nasheed said that Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has returned to govern the country due to popular support.
In 2012, Nasheed was forced to step down as president due to rioting in the streets orchestrated by opposition politicians and defecting police and military officers.
At Friday’s rally, Nasheed said that it is crucial that MDP gains the parliament majority and that the purpose of the party’s agenda for the next parliament is to fulfill the needs of the people and guarantee that the current administration complete its five-year term.
He said MDP’s ‘Agenda 19’ consists of policies formulated using information obtained from meeting with the people and enquiring on their needs.
At the rally, MPs highlighted that crucial bills proposed by the government have been at a standstill in parliament and that the only way to pass them is for MDP to have majority.
