Govt. does not accept concerns of foreign nations regarding Nasheed’s transfer: Foreign Minister

Foreign Minister Dunya Maumoon has stated that the Government does not accept the concerns voiced by foreign nations regarding former President Mohamed Nasheed’s transfer back to jail from house arrest.
Speaking in a press conference held in Foreign Ministry, Minister Dunya said that UK, America and UN rights groups had expressed concern over Nasheed’s transfer back into prison. Dunya stated that Nasheed was a convicted criminal serving a sentence.
She added that Nasheed was transferred to house arrest on doctor’s orders for a limited time and refuted the rumors that his entire sentence had been turned to a house arrest. She noted that interim Home Minister Dr. Mohamed Shainee had clarified on the details of this situation in the last press conference held.
Dunya also noted that PG had submitted to appeal Nasheed’s sentence. She said that President Yameen had continuously called on Nasheed to follow the appeal process, but no action had been seen from his side. She also said that clemency can only be granted by President when the due legal processes were completed and that this had been clearly communicated to the foreign parties as well.
Dunya added that the Government will not bend rules for an individual and that it would not accept decrees and statements issued by foreign nations that favor different treatment. She also said that the Government will adhere to the rules and laws of the nation.
